Alfred Nobel is known for inventing dynamite as well as bequeathing his fortune to establish the Nobel Prize. Fluent in six languages, he was a chemist, engineer, businessman and philantropist, but he had no talent for happiness. Late in life he wrote to his sister-in-law: ‘I drift about without rudder or compass, a wreck on the sea of life.’
