[Perhaps Northrop Frye’s dictum, “Direct and simple language always has some force behind it,” can be most easily appreciated in the case of derogatory epithets—especially if they’re slang. The reader will already be familiar with (and perhaps fluent in the use of) most of these uncomplimentary terms. And thank goodness for that! Imagine someone new to English trying to learn all their meanings and connotations from official definitions, and when to use them appropriately. It doesn’t bear thinking about.
