[The following is Malcolm Muggeridge’s diary entry for July 23, 1949, written while holidaying on the French Riviera.]

For me, here at Roquebrune-Cap Martin, perfect existence. Rise about 7, drink tea, bathe, walk by the sea; 9 breakfast (crusty bread, butter, fruit, coffee) and then sit at little quiet shady table looking straight on to the Mediterranean, write a bit, read, think; at noon long swim and lie in the sun until 1:30; then lunch, (cheese, salad, ham, red wine, fruit) and after lunch doze and read; at 4:30 bathe again and in the evening walk either to Monte Carlo or to Mentone, buy newspapers and sit in a café reading them and watching people; return leisurely at about 8:30 and dine either at villa or Madame Ambert’s, solidish meal (chicken or omelette au jambon or Mediterranean fish) and enough red wine or rosé to feel drowsy; game of gin rummy with Kitty [his wife], brief read and early asleep. That—for anyone who cares to know—is how I like to live; but I dare say, as Kitty pointed out, it wouldn’t answer permanently. As a break—wonderful.
